LAS VEGAS — CES officials say today’s power outage that shut down huge swaths of the show floor at Las Vegas Convention Center for approximately two hours is related to Tuesday’s rain storm.
In a statement, CES said the power outage was caused by a “flashover on one of the facility’s transformers” due to condensation from the heavy rainfall.
The outage occurred at 11:15 a.m. Wednesday morning and lasted until approximately 1:30 p.m. Several major exhibitors, including Samsung, LG and Panasonic were down during that period.
Weather has wreaked havoc on this year’s CES, first forcing Google to delay the opening of its flashy outdoor booth for a day, and now this. Before Tuesday’s storm, it hadn’t rained here in 116 days.

Today at approximately 11:15 AM, the Central Hall and South Hall bridge meeting rooms at the Las Vegas Convention Center lost power. Power in the South Hall was restored within minutes, and power has now been fully restored to all areas. A preliminary assessment indicates that condensation from heavy rainfall caused a flashover on one of the facility’s transformers. We are grateful to NV Energy for their swift assistance, to our customers and their clients for their patience and to the staff for ensuring the safety and security of all attendees and exhibitors.”
