David Lynch’s “Twin Peaks,” a cult classic TV show set and taped in Washington state, returned this weekend with a follow-on series, 26 years after it originally went off the air.

The two-hour series premiere included many of the original cast members, including the Pacific Northwest’s own Kyle MacLachlan as Agent Dale Cooper. But it also featured a surprise appearance by another familiar face: Microsoft’s Surface line.

A Surface device made a subtle cameo in the hands of Agent Cooper’s evil doppelganger, also played by MacLachlan.

Microsoft just announced its new Surface Laptop, a big investment in its PC hardware line, but this doesn’t appear to be that device. While it’s a little hard to tell which Surface product was used in the scene, our bet is that it’s a Surface 3 or Surface Pro 3, based on the placement of the Windows logo. The user appears to be using a Type Cover keyboard attachment.

While the Windows icon on the Surface’s side was a little hard to spot, the scene stood out for a different reason: it was one of the only times technology of any kind made an appearance in the premiere. I didn’t even catch a whiff of a smartphone in the entire two hours, although some vaguely sci-fi cameras and a small recording device did show up as important plot elements.

The lack of tech is in line with the original series, which also eschewed most mentions of technology, something that can’t be said for most TV in the early 90’s.

The reboot might not highlight much tech, but it’s taking advantage of the connected world to broadcast episodes over Showtime streaming, available through services like Amazon TV, YouTube TV and others.
