Update Aug. 30: Car2go officially passed the 100,000 member milestone in Seattle Wednesday. To celebrate, car2go is reimbursing members up to $50 in ferry rides over Labor Day weekend if they use one of the company’s vehicles to get to the terminal. The promotion runs from Sept. 1-4 and members can collect their reimbursement by sending a picture of their ferry receipt to car2go here.
In addition to the 100,000 member announcement, car2go released the following data about Seattle ridership Wednesday:
- 19,055,219 – Total miles driven in Seattle since car2go launched—enough to drive to the moon and back 40 times.
- 4,543,398 –Number of car2go Seattle trips (and counting) since the location’s inception.
- 3,863 – Record trips taken in one day: September 30, 2016.
- 5,255 – Trips taken to Alki Beach.
- 155,386+ – Number of trips taken so far in four-door Mercedes-Benz car2go vehicles.
- 146 – Number of car2go members sharing each car2go vehicle in Seattle
Seattle is still car2go’s most popular U.S. market, with more than 95,000 members, according to new stats provided by the company. That’s up from 59,000 at the end of 2014 despite increased competition from other transportation companies in the region.
Car2go has increasingly had to share the road with the competition ever since the Seattle City Council approved legislation to allow additional free-floating, car sharing pilot programs to launch in the city. In the wake of that decision, BMW piloted its car2go competitor, ReachNow, in Seattle offering a similar service with luxury vehicles instead of smart cars.
Not to be left behind, car2go began adding four-door Mercedes-Benz models to its car sharing fleet in January. Car2go is a subsidiary of Daimler AG, which also owns Mercedes-Benz.
Car2go says that it has seen a 34.85 percent year-over-year increase in average usage per car since introducing the luxury vehicles.
Seattle isn’t the only Pacific Northwest company that’s bullish on car-sharing. Car2go’s most popular city for all of North America is Vancouver, B.C. with more than 135,000 members.
Seattle’s reputation as an early adopter of sharing economy technology has also attracted two dockless bike sharing companies that operate under a similar model to car2go. The bike sharing companies add two more alternative transportation options to a city that’s grappling with massive growth and the traffic that goes along with it.
Car2go reports 40 percent year-over-year growth for the first half of 2017 across all 11 of its North American locations, based on the number of trips taken. The company’s Seattle fleet has 315 Mercedes-Benz cars and a total fleet of 750 vehicles.
