There’s a lot of new people moving to Seattle — and we mean a LOT. That huge shift is creating tension between newcomers and old timers, and it’s why two local journalists launched The Evergrey last year to foster a sense of community among Seattleites.

Now the outlet is kicking off a speakers’ series to hear from Seattle luminaries about their relationship to the city. Their first guest: Seattle transplant and Glowforge CEO Dan Shapiro, whose talk will take place on May 2 at 7 p.m. at Impact Hub.

Shapiro first moved to Seattle in the late 90s, when Microsoft’s boom first sparked tensions between incoming techies and longtime Pacific Northwesterners. He’s stuck around, and after leaving Microsoft he went on to found and lead several Seattle-based tech startups, currently heading up the 3D laser printer maker Glowforge.

Shapiro and The Evergrey’s Monica Guzman will talk about his introduction to the city, how it has changed and his place in the Seattle community. They’ll also take questions from audience members, so come curious!

More details and tickets to the talk — and the VIP reception with Shapiro beforehand — available here, and subscribe to The Evergrey’s daily Seattle newsletter here.

That’s one of the highlights from our GeekWire community calendar, the spot for geek and tech events in the greater Pacific Northwest. See the full calendar here, submit your event here and keep reading for more suggested events over the next few weeks.
