Since launching in 2013, Volt Athletics has built a business around an online fitness training platform geared exclusively toward high school, college, and professional sports teams, rather than individual customers.

But that changes today with the debut of Volt’s new “intelligent fitness training” app that is targeted at any athlete who wants to use technology to create prescriptive and specialized workouts.

The Seattle startup on Tuesday unveiled the app, which analyzes an athlete’s individual physique and long-term goals to build sport-specific training programs that utilize algorithms to adapt with the athlete over time.

“Volt’s mission has always been to provide access to professionally built strength and conditioning to every athlete worldwide — and the launch of our intelligent training app for athletes is an important step toward realizing that vision,” Volt Athletics CEO Dan Giuliani told GeekWire.

Volt already serves more than 35,000 athletes, but Giuliani said his company’s growth highlighted the need for something targeted at the individual consumer.

“The launch of our intelligent training app gives us the opportunity to enter a larger and more diverse market of athletes — including athletes training for endurance events like triathlons, cycling, and marathons,” he noted.

There are a bevy of companies that already offer similar apps for fitness training. But Volt, which works with organizations like the University of Washington, the University of Michigan, and USA Football, says its $29 per month app focuses on innovating the delivery of personalized training content and expertise, versus only tracking metrics and storing data.

The company also has folks like Boyd Epley — the “Godfather of Strength and Conditioning” — on its advisory board, and its software is recommended by the National Strength and Conditioning Association.

Volt employs 15 and has raised more than $2 million to date.
