If you’re already bored just four days into that new Cats Lounging in the Sun desk calendar, consider something a little more heady when it comes to marking the days until your next vacation.

The folks at the Department of Energy’s Pacific Northwest National Laboratory are offering up a digital calendar and computer wallpaper featuring photographs taken during scientific research. OK, we get it, the only research you appreciate is counting sand grains on the next month’s Sports Illustrated swimsuit model. But these microscopic images are beautiful and captivating in a way that’s actually safe for work.

A news release from PNNL states that everything from batteries to bacteria are showcased over 12 months. And November even features “a magnified microbe growing on a root plant.” You read that right. Magnified!

If the colorful microscopic stuff doesn’t hold your attention during the dog days of summer, just wait until a month when “visualized computational modeling results” are showcased.

According to PNNL, the 12 images were chosen from more than 60 submitted for consideration by staff. It’s the fifth year the Richland, Wash.-based laboratory has produced the Science as Art calendar. The photographs can also be viewed over on Flickr.
