ESPN is getting serious about their eSports coverage, with a new eSports section of the ESPN website.
The site has a dedicated news sections for League of Legends, DOTA 2, and Hearthstone, and will also be running feature stories about eSports athletes like this one about South Korea’s Faker.
The writers who work on the eSports content will also be making appearances on ESPN’s SportsCenter, writes The L.A. Times.
The website launch comes after ESPN has made serious forays into eSports coverage. Last summer, it dedicated an entire issue of ESPN magazine to eSports coverage, with Seahawks running back Marshawn Lynch appearing as a Call of Duty cover model. ESPN 2 also aired a collegiate Heroes of the Storm tournament which drew millions of views — and some irate Twitter commentary from ESPN viewers who didn’t understand the sport.
But a few tweets can’t put a dent in the thirst that eSports fans have for coverage. With tons of tournaments year-round, it’s necessary to have a dedicated team to cover eSports in a meaningful way. The Daily Dot did it first, but it’s heartening to see ESPN jump on the train.
