A new drone flyover video shows the progress being made on the massive Apple Campus 2 under construction in Cupertino, Calif.
Referred to as the “Spaceship Campus” because of the flying saucer-like shape of the main headquarters building, the site features a number of interesting design elements. It was all captured in a video shot by Matthew Roberts, who refers to himself on YouTube as a digital content creator and aerial videography enthusiast.
Among the highlights:
- An underground auditorium is progressing.
- Multiple tunnels are scattered throughout the 176-acre site.
- The last section of the “Spaceship” is being completed.
- Work continues on a large R&D facility.
- There’s a 100,000-square-foot fitness facility.
- Parking structures are moving along for the 13,000 employees who will work there.
- Solar panel framing and installation is 25 percent complete.
According to Macworld’s 52 facts about the new campus, the main building is more than a mile around and its glass walls allow employees to see through both sides of the ring. The site is expected to open early next year.
Apple is hardly alone in the tech world when it comes to pushing the envelope on workplace design. Companies with lots of money to spend are looking to lure and retain skilled workers by showcasing their innovation through architecture and amenities.
In Seattle, Amazon’s ever-growing urban campus will eventually feature giant biospheres at the bases of new corporate towers on the edge of downtown. Meanwhile, Facebook’s new Seattle office, drawn up by EMP architect Frank Gehry, will feature rooftop trees, walking trails, a giant fire pit, BBQ-style dining area, and covered cafeteria.
