Amazon takes some heat for the tsunami of cardboard it unfurls this time of year. But the Seattle e-commerce giant taking part in an effort to reduce its environmental impact by giving those boxes a second life.

Amazon is helping promote a free shipping program, called Give Back Box, that encourages customers to reuse their cardboard boxes.

After shoppers receive a box from Amazon, they can repack it with household goods they want to donate. According to Give Back Box founder Monika Wiela, Goodwill covers the cost of shipping. Customers can simply print a label from GiveBackBox.com and drop the package off at a post office. Carriers deliver the boxes to the nearest Goodwill.

The initiative is the latest in a series of community-minded efforts from Amazon, which has been criticized for a lack of philanthropy in the past.
