PlayStation Icon with graffitiSony sold 4 million PlayStation 4 consoles in the September quarter, an increase of more than 21 percent from the same quarter a year ago, building on its momentum in the worldwide console market as the critical holiday shopping season approaches.

The results were reported overnight by the Japanese consumer electronics giant, as part of its quarterly earnings release. The company also boosted its forecast for PS4 sales to 17.5 million units for its current fiscal year, up from the previous forecast of 16.5 million units. Sony dropped the price of the PlayStation 4 to $350 in the U.S. in October, after the most recent quarter ended.

Sony’s latest numbers extend its lead in the global console market. Nintendo yesterday reported sales of 721,000 Wii U consoles, up from 610,000 units in the same period last year, benefitting from new titles such as Super Mario Maker and Splatoon.

In contrast with Nintendo and Sony, Microsoft recently stopped reporting unit sales figures for the Xbox One, instead providing the number of active monthly Xbox Live users each quarter. For the September quarter, the company said Xbox Live monthly active users rose to 39 million, up 28 percent from about 30 million in the same quarter a year ago.
