ps4Sony is back on top of the U.S. console market.

The PlayStation 4 outsold the Xbox One in the U.S. in January, reclaiming the title from Microsoft, which had led the U.S. console market in November and December. Sony had outpaced Microsoft in U.S. console sales for ten consecutive months up until November.

“PlayStation 4 was the top selling console in January and remains the cumulative leader in the U.S. according to NPD data,” a Sony Computer Entertainment America spokesperson said in a statement. “Since launch in November 2013, 18.5 million PS4 units and 81.8 million software units have been sold through to consumers worldwide.”

The margin of Sony’s victory isn’t clear. Neither Sony nor Microsoft released the specific number of consoles they sold in January in the U.S., and NPD leaves it to the companies to report those numbers publicly.

Microsoft may have lost some ground in the early part of January, when the company temporarily ended the promotional pricing of $349 for the Xbox One without a Kinect, bringing the price up to $399. But Microsoft quickly brought the price back down to $349, on Jan. 16, where it remains today.

The PS4 has been $399 since launch.

Microsoft said Xbox One console sales reached a record for January. The company also noted that it had “more game sales per console than any other platform” last month and saw a 22 percent growth in gamers and in hours on Xbox Live compared to one year ago.

During 2014 as a whole, on a global basis, Sony reported 18.8 million PlayStation consoles sold for the year (PS3 and PS4), with Microsoft at 12.1 million Xbox units (Xbox One and Xbox 360), and Nintendo trailing the pack, selling 3.9 million units of its Wii and Wii U consoles.

In the U.S. in January, the NPD Group also reported that hardware sales were down 23 percent from 2014, which is not surprising given that the Xbox One and PS4 launched in November 2013, experiencing a large volume of sales at the outset.
