cut the rope 5 yearsEarlier in the era of touchscreen phones, game developers were the one making the platform compelling. Just like Solitaire taught people how to use a mouse, games like Angry Birds taught people how to interact with their magical new devices. Today, one of those classic games is celebrating its fifth anniversary by announcing a new game.

In December, ZeptoLab will release the fifth installment of its physics-based puzzle franchise with Cut the Rope: Magic. With more than 750 million worldwide downloads and appearances of main character Om Nom in Facebook’s Stickers and even his own upcoming movie, Cut the Rope has become a juggernaut for the company.

“When we released the original Cut the Rope, Om Nom didn’t even have a name,” said original Cut the Rope designer Semyon Voinov. “We had no idea how he looked from behind or whether he could even move on such short legs. We also weren’t sure if he had any friends. Over the past five years, we have been discovering Om Nom and his story, not only for our audience’s sake, but for our own as well. And we still have many interesting questions we intend to answer for our players.”

The new game will add a magical twist to the puzzler. Previous editions brough Om Nom though holiday wonderlands, into a scientist’s lab and on travels through time.

Fans of the series can play the current games today for free prizes and a special birthday hat, or they can catch up on the history of Om Nom with the infographic below. Some interesting stats to point out: people played more than 2,700 years worth of Cut the Rope in one month last year and used enough in-game balloons to lift three Boeing 747s off the ground.
