5th_Gen_Intel_Core_processor_with_Intel_Iris_Graphics_dieIntel released its new fleet of dual-core Core CPUs today, giving computer makers access to a new line of more powerful processors. The new “Broadwell” chips, which are driven by the company’s 14nm process, offer gains in graphics processing, with 24 percent better graphics performance over the previous generation of processors.

Most users, however, will see a bigger change: the new chips bring up to 1.5 hours increased battery life over their predecessors. That’s a big shift, especially as personal computers have to compete with tablets that feature day-long battery life. PC manufacturers especially have been pushing 2-in-1 computers that can serve as both a tablet and a laptop, and the added power savings from these new chips will help make those more appealing.

The new chips come after massive delays to the Broadwell line, which was supposed to be ready last year.

In addition to the Core chips, Intel also started shipping a new “Cherry Trail” processor for tablets built on the same 14nm technology. It’s a move by the company to try and pick up share in the dedicated tablet market, which has been dominated by devices with processors based on the ARM architecture.
