We can put rovers on Mars and probes on comets. So what was next? Shooting Superman back into space, of course.

Inspired by Felix Baumgartner‘s 2012 leap, RS Components‘ crafty engineers at DesignSpark took on this feat. “When one of our agencies called up asking us if we would help Mattel put one of their toys into space in September, at the end of their pitch my response was, ‘You had me at Mattel,'” wrote Pete Wood, one of the project’s coordinators, on DesignSpark’s blog.

As part of Mattel’s Extreme Toys Travel campaign (seriously, what a great idea to take toys around the world and film them battling the elements), the challenge was to build, launch and execute a successful ascent and re-entry to Earth. The DesignSpark team came up with the plan, which you can read more about on their blog.

After reaching a height of 29,000 meters, and outside temps reaching negative 40 degrees Celsius, Superman enjoyed free falling at 200 kilometers per hour before cruising back to Earth like a boss in his little parachute.

The “Man of Steel” landed in Wales.

Now, this begs the question: What should be next thing we blast into space?
