In other star news today, the new director to take on Star Trek 3 will be none other than Fast & Furious director Justin Lin.

Lin replaces Roberto Orci, who replaced J.J. Abrams as he moved on to direct Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Lin’s directed three movies in the F&F set, including Tokyo Drift and Fast 6, according to Deadline.

“We hope [that] means that Bad Robot and Paramount are looking for a Trek with more explosions, more familial bonds, [and] more insane plot twists,” shares The Verge.

This news follows The Atlantic‘s impassioned plea last week for Star Trek to return to TV. Since the end of Star Trek: Enterprise in 2005, fans have only gotten their fix through films. The Atlantic:

The bigger problem is that there’s no way for this Star Trek series to come off as anything but a retread. The ensemble (Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, John Cho, and Simon Pegg among others) do a great job, and the burnished high-budget visuals are unlike anything Trek ever really enjoyed, but still, it’s Captain Kirk on the U.S.S. Enterprise. It’s been done to death.

The Atlantic argues that the TV version would be a “refreshing and well-timed” return to the tube, especially due to the popularity of sci-fi and cult-TV hits right now.

Do you think Star Trek should be back on TV, stick to the movies, or just get jiggy with both?
