It might seem from the outside like Satya Nadella has already made made changes inside Microsoft — embracing a “mobile first, cloud first” strategy and making decisions that the company might have avoided or delayed in the past.

But the new Microsoft CEO is still working on the company’s long-term strategy, and the outcome will become clearer to the outside world in the next few months.

That’s the word from John Thompson, the board member who took over as Microsoft chairman from Bill Gates, as the Microsoft co-founder took on a broader role as an adviser inside the company.

“Satya is still defining and tuning what he wants the ultimate strategy of the company to be, and over the course of the next three to six months, that will clearly become more visible to the marketplace at large,” said Thompson in an interview with the Wall Street Journal, published this morning.

Thompson said the mood inside the company has already changed.

“You would find it to be a very different environment today than it might have been a year or two ago,” Mr. Thompson said. “The employee base in Microsoft, particularly the tens of thousands of engineers we have, are ecstatic that we have someone with Satya’s background leading and guiding and managing our company. Bill is as involved as Satya wants him to be.”
