Apple first added its high-resolution retina displays to the iPhone with the iPhone 4 launch in 2010. Four years later, it’s now coming to the desktop.
At today’s press event in Cupertino, Apple exec Phil Shiller unveiled a new iMac with a Retina display. The new hardware sports what Apple is calling a Retina 5K display, with 14.7 million pixels – 7 times more than standard HD, and more than the new 4K displays that are becoming more popular. The display update includes a number of other performance increases, with a new Intel Core i5 processor that will push 3.5 teraflops of computing power. The update also includes Thunderbolt 2 ports, and a 1 terabyte Fusion Drive (a combination of a SSD and spinning hard disk) standard in the base model.
It will come in a 27-inch form factor, and starts at $2499. People interested in picking one up for themselves will be able to buy it from Apple today.
