Mixpanel’s graph at 2:30 p.m. today

Whenever a company releases a major software update, there’s always one lingering question: shiny and new is nice, but how many people are actually installing it? Analytics company Mixpanel was curious, so they set up a live-updating graph that shows you the state of iOS adoption around the world.

As of press time, the most recent data point puts iOS 7 on a bit more than 12.5 percent of all iPhones, iPads and iPod Touches. That roughly squares with what I’ve been seeing around San Francisco today – there are a lot more people walking around with iOS 6 (or older) on their phones than there are iOS 7 adopters, but iOS 7 isn’t nearly as rare as it was last week.

What’s particularly interesting about Mixpanel’s data is that the percentage of devices using older versions of iOS is decreasing while iOS 7’s market share continues to rise. It seems some of the people who have avoided updating to iOS 6 see something in iOS 7 that makes them want to take that leap.
