Apple’s sales of the iPhone 5S and 5C went gangbusters over the weekend, with the company selling 9 million phones in three days. But according to analytics company Localytics, sales of the two models were nowhere close to equal.

In the U.S., Apple is selling almost 3.5 times as many units of the 5S as they are the 5C. According to Localytics, the 5S and 5C now make up 1.36 percent of the total number of activated phones in the U.S.

Internationally, the gap between the 5S and 5C widens, with Apple selling 3.7 times as many 5S units. In Japan, the 5S is outselling the 5C 5.5 to one. The data seems to be clear: phone buyers are definitely picking the 5S over the 5C, at least for now.

Of course, there may be multiple reasons for the disparity. First, the 5S is the latest and greatest, and people rushing out to buy a new iPhone on opening weekend would seem to be more likely to pay a premium for the newest gear. Second, when I was in line on Thursday night, many of the people there wanted to ensure that they got a 5S before Apple ran out of supplies. Nobody seemed to be expecting the same scarcity for the 5C.

While the current trends are interesting, I think it’s too soon to extrapolate from this weekend into the next year. While I still expect the 5S to be in greater demand overall, because of its greater capabilities, I don’t think the gap will be quite as large as it is now.
