dvlup1Lots of mobile companies offer rewards to developers who make apps on their platforms. But Nokia’s new DVLUP program is a little different, using a gamification model that encourages competition among Windows Phone developers.

What’s particularly interesting about DVLUP is that it provides a chance for developers to boost the visibility of their apps within the Windows Phone Store by winning points. Those points can be earned via quizzes and challenges related to Windows Phone app development.

Developers have the option to exchange the points either for marketing and distribution support mentioned above — a week’s worth of “Spotlight” placement in the Windows Phone Store or Nokia’s App Social, for example — or they can win merchandise like devices, gear and gift cards.

Nokia said it plans to offer other promotional opportunities like placement in TV, print and digital placement campaigns.

DVLUP is also unique in that it enables Windows Phone developers to create, book, and manage their own app promotion and marketing campaigns. The rewards program, which has been in beta for about a year, is free and available in more than 20 countries. Members can join with a Windows Live ID.
