logo_AmazonStudios_692Amazon Studios announced today that it has launched a new tool to help screenwriters map their ideas for a new film or television project.

Storybuilder is a way for creators to set up a virtual pinboard to map out ideas like character relationships and the flow of a story. When dealing with a large, ranging story like that of a feature film or television series, it’s important to keep track of all the different relationships between characters, locations and key plot events. It’s also built as a universal web app, so creators can jot down ideas from their smartphone, tablet or computer.

“With Amazon Storybuilder, we are translating a writer’s physical index cards and corkboard into the digital world and giving them access to their ideas anywhere they are — if an idea pops up writers can edit their digital corkboard instantly on any mobile device,” Roy Price, the Director of Amazon Studios, said in a press release.

While the tool is hosted by Amazon Studios, the company is quite clear that any content uploaded by creators will remain theirs, and that Amazon won’t retain any ownership or option rights on content that’s uploaded. That said, it does still put creators in the midset of potentially submitting their work to Amazon, which is on the lookout for new original content that will help it compete with Netflix.
