Twitter announced updates to its iPhone and Android apps today — adding advanced search functions, a condensed activity/discover section, and improved push notifications.

New to the app is the “activity” feature that tracks what your friends follow, favorite and retweet. This feature, similar to Facebook’s ticker, was previously exclusive to Twitter’s web interface. It’s in the “Discover” section of the updated apps — which has become the landing pad for all the extras Twitter has added over the years, including trends, branded tweets, and suggested followers.

Improvements to search include name and Twitter handle auto-complete, as found on the website and some third-party apps. Also added to search is a spellchecker, a feature not even available natively on the website.

Push notifications have been expanded to include retweets, favorited tweets, and follows. You can now get those as alerts on your phone, so you can finally turn off those “x has followed you” emails.

Here are the iPhone and Android app links.
