Perhaps one of the strangest, most unnecessary pieces of tech unleashed at CES is this: A smartbelt that adjusts itself based on what you eat.

Made by French startup company Emiota based in Paris, this heavy-looking metal contraption emerged yesterday at the CES Unveiled showcase. It was apparently quite the showstopper, getting several mentions online, which have called it “hideous” yet “a standout hit,” according to CNET.

The belt not only monitors how much you eat, but how much activity you get, a.k.a. notifying its user when it’s time to knock off eating those nachos and take a walk around the block.

How much will one of these knock you back? “A Belty representative told Mashable it is a ‘high-end product’ with likely a luxury price tag.” According to an Emiota rep, it is set to hit the market by the end of 2015.
