If you like science fiction or anime — or both — it’s shaping up to be a great weekend, at least if you live in the Seattle region.

Sakura-Con 2012, the largest Japanese anime convention in the Pacific Northwest, will be held at the Washington State Convention Center today through Sunday. The weekend is full of panels, gaming, contests and other programs plus lots of fantastic cosplay, as documented last year by GeekWire photographer Annie Laurie Malarkey.

Sakura-Con a members-only event, for people who belong to the Asia Northwest Cultural Education Association, but for those who want to attend, $60 memberships to the group can be purchased during the event at the nearby Grand Hyatt Seattle Hotel.

Meanwhile, to the south, the annual Norwescon science-fiction convention started yesterday and runs through Sunday at the Doubletree by Hilton Hotel near the airport in SeaTac, Wash. Check out the event schedule or download the mobile app. Also see GeekWire columnist Frank Catalano’s report from the scene last year.

Norwescon tickets are available at the door, and they run $50 for today, $50 for Saturday, $30 for Sunday, or $70 for the whole weekend.

Pro Tip: A good way to track upcoming fan conventions and geek events such as these in the Pacific Northwest is this list maintained by Isaac Alexander.
