Spotify is now available on Windows Phone, letting premium Spotify subscribers access the popular music service on the Microsoft device.

Engadget has a hands-on look at the app, as does Microsoft’s Andy Colley. The app requires the Windows Phone 7.5 update.

This was one of the announcements made by Microsoft yesterday at the New York City event where the company promoted its mobile platform by constructing a gigantic Windows Phone.

Even before the Spotify news, Microsoft was expressing confidence in its Windows Phone app library, which now numbers more than 35,000.

“We talked to real users and said, tell me the apps that you can’t live without,” said Microsoft’s Greg Sullivan in an interview. “And we looked across iPhone and Android, and for the (must-have) apps that are available on those platforms, we have 90 percent of them. So we feel with the app quality and quantity we’ve really gotten to critical mass.”

Microsoft is trying to reverse its fortunes in the mobile market, with its share of the U.S. smartphone market dipping into the single digits.

Spotify is already available for iPhone and Android. Here’s what the Spotify app looks like in Microsoft’s “Metro” design style.
