video-screen-shotIf it seems like video content is all over your Facebook News Feed, you’re not alone: the company revealed today that videos it hosts get 3 billion views per day.

CEO Mark Zuckerberg revealed the new statistic on the company’s fourth quarter earnings conference call, as he discussed the primary content shared on Facebook. Early in the social network’s existence, people were primarily sharing text with some photos and other content. Now, people are primarily sharing photos with some video and text content. Moving forward, Zuckerberg expects there to be even more video content shared through the social network.

Of course, the bump in video views was likely helped by Facebook’s change to its website and mobile apps that gets videos to automatically play as soon as they appear in a user’s News Feed. Zuckerberg also didn’t disclose how long someone had to watch a video in order for it to count as a view, so it’s not clear how much time people spent watching the videos.

The growth of video content on Facebook is good news for the company’s business. Video, by nature, can keep people on the site or in its mobile apps longer. What’s more, video advertising will likely be a lucrative option for Facebook, especially because of its similarity to television advertising.
