S. “Soma” Somasegar, the longtime Microsoft executive who most recently led the company’s Developer Division, is leaving the company after 27 years, he confirmed this afternoon.
“It has been an absolutely great journey – working with such an amazing team and building great developer technologies,” he said as part of a series of posts on Twitter this afternoon. Somasegar noted that he plans to pursue the “next phase” of his career, but didn’t go into detail about his future plans.

Somasegar has been at Microsoft since 1989, working on 8 releases of Windows before joining the Developer Division. He has helped to lead Microsoft’s push into open-source technologies, including the decision last year to open-source the .NET core server runtime and framework.
Mary Jo Foley, who broke the news on ZDNet, quoted a company spokesperson saying that Microsoft is working on its transition plan for the Developer Division and hopes to announce the plan in the next few weeks.
