googleglassesThose people who thought that Google Glass had finally shuffled off this mortal coil have another think coming. Luxottica CEO Massimo Vian said at the eyewear maker’s general meeting that the company is working with Google on the next edition of Glass, according to a report by the Wall Street Journal.

Earlier this year, the company revealed that the Glass project would be watched over by Nest boss and former Apple exec Tony Fadell as part of its push to get the high-tech headgear back on track. Now, it seems that we’ll see a new version of Google Glass sooner rather than later, though Vian declined to give any sort of timetable for the device.

Of course, it still remains to be seen if the world is clamoring for a new version of Google Glass. Between the high price tag and the feature set, the original Glass hardware was held up by its detractors as a symbol of the tech industry’s worst excesses. Some people were put off by how much it would take someone to get the hardware, as well as Glass’s built-in camera, which raised privacy concerns even though the headgear was set up to always light up when the camera was running.

By the time Google ceased sales of the device earlier this year, it had been banned from a wide variety of businesses, including movie theaters and some restaurants. Still, wearable technology is still a growing market, and it’s clear from interest in Microsoft’s HoloLens that augmented reality headgear is still something that fascinates people. There may be hope for Glass yet.
