Intellectual Ventures won a $17 million jury verdict against Symantec in federal court in Delaware today — significantly less than the $298 million Intellectual Ventures was seeking, but a victory nonetheless for the Bellevue-based patent holding and technology company.
As reported by Reuters, IV alleged that Symantec’s security software, including Norton antivirus tools, infringed on its patents. The jury found that Symantec didn’t infringe on a third IV patent.
Before the trial began, Symantec had sought, without success, to keep Intellectual Ventures from seeking so much in damages from a patent that IV had acquired for less than $1 million.
The news service notes that the verdict could have an impact in a similar case being pursued by Intellectual Ventures against Trend Micro. That trial is set to begin in May.
