Leading Apple blogger John Gruber reported today that Apple will be streaming footage from its iTunes Festival at SXSW in Austin, Texas, to iOS devices, but users will have to update their device to iOS 7.1 in order to view the stream. Since the festival will kick off a week from Tuesday, that means the update should be hitting devices any day now.
The update should fix a number of pain points for iOS users, including a nagging crash that can cause devices to lock up and show a black or white screen with an Apple logo before returning to ordinary functionality. It’s unclear why the company will require that users update in order to view the SXSW stream, but asking people to do so will help speed adoption of the new update.
The launch will come scant weeks after the release of iOS 7.0.6, which plugged a critical security hole in the way that iPhones and iPads handle secure connections over the Internet.
Apple did not respond to a request for comment.
