Seahawks fans better hope that the Madden Curse is over.

shermanmaddenRichard Sherman, Seattle’s trash-talking star cornerback, will grace the cover of Madden NFL 2015 after beating out Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton in a 16-player online bracket-style fan vote competition.

Sherman, who last month secured a giant $57 million contract, joins Ray Lewis and Troy Polamalu as the only defensive players to appear on the cover. The 26-year-old business-savvy Stanford grad made it past Alshon Jeffery, Jimmy Graham and Colin Kaepernick before trouncing Newton in the final.

Most of the past 16 players who have appeared on Madden covers have typically gone on to either perform poorly in the following season or get hurt. Even former Seahawks MVP running back Shaun Alexander broke his foot during the 2006-07 season after appearing on the cover of Madden 2007.

Let’s just hope the Madden Curse takes a break next season and the Hawks go on to win their second straight Super Bowl.

Madden NFL 2015 hits shelves August 26. Check out the latest trailer here:
