Cray has finally unveiled the next generation of its XC series supercomputers and CS series cluster supercomputers. The XC40 series and CS400 series offer twice the performance of their predecessors, and sport Intel’s new Xeon E5-2600 v3 processors, which are based on the Haswell architecture. In addition to the processor boost, Cray clients will be able to add a new DataWarp I/O accelerator to any XC40 unit.

DataWarp is supposed to alleviate the bottleneck between computation resources and disk-based storage by connecting high-performance solid-state drives directly to an XC40’s compute nodes.

In addition to announcing the updates to its product line, Cray also said that it has been awarded a contract to install a new XC40 at the Swiss National Supercomputing Centre in Lugano, Switzerland. The company has already sold a number of XC40 systems to customers including the Korea Meteorological Association, the National Nuclear Security Administration and the U.S. Defense Department.
