obamaMaybe President Barack Obama pre-ordered an Xbox One for his daughters. Or it’s possible that he’s been taking some stress out recently by getting on the sticks.

Whatever the case, Obama just plugged Microsoft’s Xbox when discussing the nation’s battle over the government shutdown.

While explaining why he thinks Republicans are being unreasonable in their attempt to halt funding of Obamacare, the president used an Xbox analogy.

“You don’t get a chance to call your bank and say, ‘I’m not going to pay my mortgage this month unless you throw in a new car and an Xbox,'” the president said.

This isn’t the first time Obama has mentioned the Xbox in public. Back in 2009, he recommended that parents “put away the Xbox,” and encourage children to sleep earlier, read books and do their homework.

Microsoft cleverly responded to Obama, noting the Xbox’s timer feature and parental controls.

I think he is super confused. I think what the Republicans are saying is that if you want to pay the mortgage, you can’t use your credit card to do so, you are going to have to give up the Xbox, iPhone, downsize the car and stop buying everything for your posse. Understandable given who we are talking about here though. Obama knows people are dumb enough to think the analogy is appropriate.

Not sure either party can claim the moral high ground here. Both sides are risking a US and possible worldwide financial catastrophe in order to further their respective agendas. And frankly that’s just reckless and irresponsible.

      • Joe McGrath

I completely agree with you. However, I don’t think asking to stop paying for stuff we don’t have the money to pay for is akin to wanting an Xbox and a new car. That is the only point I was making.

    • Guest

I think you’re super confused Joe. This is 100% the fault of the Teahadist Republicans. They started it and they can end it by dropping their extortion demands.

      • Joe McGrath

If a septic system goes bad and your house fills up with sewage, what do you do? Do you get rid of the sewage or raise the roof so more sewage can accumulate?
Extortion is the criminal offense of obtaining money, property or services through coercion, or force. Income taxes are a legal form of extortion. It is money taken from you with the threat of force if you refuse to pay it. The GOP is asking to not spend more of the money we don’t have, and limit generational theft. I am not sure that qualifies as extortion, seems like the opposite of extortion in fact. Their approach has been tactless, but at some point, we have to stop spending, taxing more solves the problem for a week or so, cutting spending will solve the problem long term.

        • Harkonnen

Really? The GOP was fine with plenty of wasteful spending as long as it was their idea (Iraq, the F-35, etc.). Suddenly they find religion when poor people get healthcare? Seriously, the Tea Party is holding John Boehner hostage by his shrinking and sun-tanned testes and that is the reason why this is happening. The GOP lost the big battle so now they are waging a guerrilla war against the president.

          • Joe McGrath

Well, no one can take you seriously given your insults, but the issue is government spending as a whole. I hear many tea party peple who want to cut defense spending as well. There isn’t enough money for the current state, even if you tax all millionares 100% over the first million.

          • Harkonnen

Actually, I think they can take me seriously. Perhaps just not you because you disagree. Boehner has been a terrible Speaker of the House, unable to get meaningful work down and far too easily controlled by strong, minority elements in the party. He’s been backed into a corner and, according to news reports, he is desperate for a way out but Ted Cruz and Friends are in this game for themselves and won’t let him.

          • Joe McGrath

I don’t disagree, but when you start talking about someone’s balls and calling what one faction of a party is doing guerilla warfare, you lose credibility in your argument, similar to if you compared Obama to Hitler or said he wasn’t born in the U.S.A.
Every politician is in it for themselves, that is how politics works; they are narcissists. It is people who wake up in the morning with teh desire to control the lives of others. If one group of them believes that entails not spending more money than we have, that isn’t necessarily a bad thing that should be villianized, certainly not anymore then leveraging future generations’ prosperity to fund obligations for current generations entitlements.

          • Harkonnen

I agree with you on that point (that politicians act from their own self-interest), though some do so more than others if that self-interest is based in fear which I think is what is fueling the GOP’s “shut-down” strategy.

So I stand behind my view that fringe elements of the GOP are conducting a form of political “guerrilla warfare.” Their supporters are groups that feel disenfranchised and left behind in a rapidly-changing world. This op-ed piece says it far better than I: http://opinionator.blogs.nytimes.com/2013/10/08/anger-can-be-power/

Getting back to Speaker Boehner, these are the times that test a person’s soul and create opportunities to grow and he is running from that as he has in the past. he is probably intent on securing his salary and standing instead of stepping up his game.

I shouldn’t take about his balls, because it seems that he doesn’t have any (metaphorically-speaking, of course).

The Greenberg study cited is absurd, for many reasons, but here are a few:

            http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052702304171804579121413073509676.html?KEYWORDS=best+of+web
For every op-ed there is saying it is the republicans’ fault, there is one saying it is the democrats fault:

            http://blogs.wsj.com/peggynoonan/2013/10/08/the-strange-shutdown/?KEYWORDS=shutdown

This even sounds semi-rational, but is going unheard:

Keep in mind the President is the one who has said repeatedly that he will not negotiate. Teapartiers have said they would. It really doesn’t matter because as long as they blame each other, nothing is going to happen. Washington needs a leader right now (like a Reagan or Clinton), which it utterly lacks.
Guerilla warfare is nothing like what is happening. Not even close, guessing you have zero military experience. To make the representation and to continue to insult individuals makes it hard to have intellectual discourse with you. I find myself just arguing one side because of your bias, though i don’t even necessarily agree with the side I am arguing for.

          • willhe

Let’s see village idiot #1. I know you’ve lived under a rock since Charlie Brown got in office but Lucy has been moving that football every time. They don’t want to negotiate and you really have to be real stupid to believe that they do. Both days of inauguration these anti-american terrorist were plotting to fuck up the country to make the black guy look bad. There number one goal is quoted for him to fail. Not to make America better. By Any Means Neccesary…. whatever it takes if they have to destroy America and the world economy so be it. Get the wool out of your eyes sheep

          • hj

Perhaps you missed this description of the Republican fringe’s desire to “negotiate”:

R: Can I burn down your house?
            O: No.
R: OK, then can I burn down the top floor?
            O: No.
            R: How about the garage?
            O: No.
R: Then let’s sit down and talk about what part of your house I *can* burn down..
            O: No.
            R: YOU”RE NOT NEGOTIATING!!!

    • willhe

And you are dumb enough to think that’s what the republicans are saying. It’s more like we will burn this country down since the black guy is in office. That party that you became a ball licker for are worst than Al Queda. They are the enemy within. Wake the fuck up

      • Joe McGrath

Ha, always enjoy comments from the group that Winston Churchill famously said was the best argument against democracy.

I wonder where these derps are coming from. Like, I’m trying to figure out how some teenage virgins discovered this site in the first place.

You know that worthless anti-america terrorist party that would rather burn down the country instead of working with the black guy has to pass something before he can sign it. So all the blame goes to the Rethugs. You terrorist sympathizer

I wish Obama would stop using Xbox to make his point. Microsoft’s game console (Xbox) wants nothing to do with gov politics.

    • willhe

Dumbass he said it once… geesh

      • Rocco

Your Ignorant, and retarded for coming at me without knowing the truth. Apparently you didn’t know this is NOT the first time he has mentioned XBOX in his speeches before. You would have even known that if your “DUMBASS” took the time to read this article, but your dumbass didn’t. Your to much of a dumbass to know how not to call people a dumbass on the internet before knowing the truth, and then making yourself look like a Dumbass. However, your to much of a Dumbass “yourself” to know that, because that’s what dumbass people like you do, and exactly why Obama is in office. So you are a new kind of stupid here, Welcome! I think it’s awesome that you just put a sock in your own mouth. LMAO

        • http://ClaussConcept.com Jason Gerard Clauss

I wouldn’t bother arguing with “willhe” who is obviously a teenager who didn’t get enough from mom and a little too much from dad if you know what I mean.

          • Rocco

lol that’s just the way I speak to ignorant dumbass people! lol. But you are probably right about him, a “teenager”.

          • http://ClaussConcept.com Jason Gerard Clauss

I must admit, it’s entertaining. We usually don’t get Cat 5 retards here. Enjoy it while it lasts; it won’t be long before willhe gets his internet privileges away for clopping to My Little Pony porn.
