IMG_1246While ESPN’s mobile apps have been going gangbusters – with its mobile properties seeing more visitors than its website in September – the sports broadcasting giant has decided to completely overhaul its popular ScoreCenter app for iOS and Android, and give it a new (yet) familiar name: SportsCenter.

The new app features a redesign for both platforms, as well as some new features, including performance enhancements, and power user tools to get quick access to your favorite teams from a variety of sports, just like its predecessor. But the redesign also brings a lot more. The name also seems to represent the purpose of the app itself. While ScoreCenter in its infancy was mostly just a way to keep track of the games that were being played on a given day, the SportsCenter app also wants to be a clearinghouse for personalized sports news, driven by ESPN’s content.

The app features new video content from the network, as well as “clubhouses”: specialized team pages that aggregate news, videos, scores and social content (at this point, just tweets from ESPN personalities and a team’s official Twitter account) to provide a cohesive snapshot of a team. There’s also an inbox tab that aggregates all of the news stories about the teams you’ve marked as favorites in the app and keeps it in one place.

The SportsCenter app is available in the iOS App Store, and will be available in the Google Play Store later today.
