Microsoft plans to launch the long-awaited Hulu Plus service for its Xbox Live network tomorrow, allowing Xbox Live Gold members who pay an extra $8/month to get current TV shows and classic movies on their televisions via the game console. The service is free for the first week, under a promotional offer.

No doubt the launch date was determined long ago, and the timing is coincidental, but it’s notable that it comes smack in the middle of the extended outage of the PlayStation Network — which is, among other things, preventing Hulu users from accessing the service via the PlayStation 3. Hulu previously announced plans to credit PSN/PS3 users to compensate for the outage.

The arrival of Hulu on Xbox Live is the latest entertainment option for the Microsoft console, building on Netflix, ESPN and other content sources. Will be interesting to see if this is a tipping point for any Xbox Live users to cancel traditional cable TV service.
