Amazon.com is rolling out the big guns at its news conference in New York City this morning even before the unveiling of its Kindle Fire tablet. The biggest news so far: Amazon will come out with a touch-screen Kindle e-reader for $99 and one without a touch screen for $79.

The prices huge news in the world of consumer electronics, where $99 is considered a magic price that can boost the sales of a product through impulse purchases. Amazon had previously been getting close to that level with its ad-supported Kindles, but this is a major breakthrough on price.

The Kindle Touch, as it’s called, will also come in a version with 3G wireless connectivity for $149.
