Hidden Bay Retreat is a short flight from West Coast cities, such as Seattle and Vancouver.

The waterways throughout the Inside Passage of this region rival the Mediterranean and the Caribbean for the most discerning of yachtsman and sailors alike. The Alaskan portion of the Inside Passage extends 500 miles (800 km) from north to south and 100 miles (160 km) from east to west. The area encompasses 1,000 islands, 15,000 miles (24,000 km) of shoreline and thousands of coves and bays. Known as the Alexander Archipelago, these waterways are mostly protected from the Pacific Ocean. In addition to thousands of serene bays for quiet moorage, the most popular destinations include the famous Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve, where the glacier meets the bay and icebergs are formed in dramatic fashion to the delight of onlookers.

Sleeping in would be tough knowing that world-class fishing is right outside your door. Sited on one of the historically most productive fish cannery locations, it’s not surprising that Hood Bay literally teems with fish – not to mention abundant Dungeness, King and Snow crab as well as prawns. There are four anadromous fish streams drawing annual runs of Dolly Varden, Cutthroat and Steelhead Trout, Pink, Chum and Coho Salmon. Simply cast a line off the dock for prized Rockfish or bottom fish in the bay for massive Halibut. Trophy fishing is a year round adventure in nearby Chatham Strait, which is effectively a highway for all migrating fish species in Southeastern Alaska. Or for a change in pace, walk up nearby streams for highly-productive fly fishing or cast into nearby lakes for a rewarding variety of fish species.

Positioned front and center on Hood Bay residents and guests are treated to a daily theater of wildlife. Bald Eagles and Ravens soar above, routinely catching fish right off the shoreline. A little further out in the bay are Humpback Whales, Killer Whales and Sea Lions, which are also commonly spotted. And two times a day, a dramatic tide reveals a beautiful flora of exposed marine landscapes and tidal pools that await discovery. The main creek at the head of the North Arm of Hood Bay is a duck hunter’s paradise, as many species of waterfowl frequent the area. And during the fall migration witness flights of Teal, Mallards, Gadwall, Widgeon, and occasionally a few Pintail, Snow Geese or a flock of Swan. Many species of salt water waterfowl are also found including Loons, Goldeneye, Scoter, Bufflehead, Harlequin and even Old Squaw. By April of each year a migration of Rufus Hummingbirds congregate along the shoreline with as many as forty birds on a single feeder at a time. An uplands hike will almost always include sightings of Brown Bear, Deer or Grouse. From sea to sky this ecosystem is forever preserved as life perfect balance.
