Space Tech Talks: Electric Propulsion with Paige Northway
November 16 @ 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm$10
Seattle has been a major player in the space industry for decades, and the cutting edge innovation is only getting more exciting every year. The ‘Space Tech Talks’ series highlights exciting space science and engineering work being done right here in our own backyard. This is your front row seat to see and learn about Seattle’s disruptive space technologies as they are happening.
First talk is on Friday, November 16th at extraSlice!
An overview of Electric Propulsion and its uses with a closer look at the propulsion system on HuskySat-1. The talk will describe the benefits and drawbacks of electric propulsion over conventional chemical means; touch on the how and why of several types of electric propulsion systems; and go into more detail on the pulsed plasma thruster being tested in space aboard UW’s HuskySat-1.
Paige Northway is a PhD candidate in the Department of Earth and Space Sciences at the University of Washington working on plasma propulsion systems for small satellites. With a background in engineering physics and an interest in both space sciences and instrumentation, Paige helped co-found the Husky Satellite Lab at UW, where students from across campus have come together to create a satellite the size of a shoebox and to learn about the difficulties in designing and building for launch and space environments.
