How to build a hydrophone

January 8 @ 7:00 pm - 10:00 pm

Free

Hydrophones, or underwater microphones, let us listen in on the underwater world. They’re used for biology research, tracking earthquakes, and underwater surveys and communication. At this presentation you’ll learn about the physics of underwater sound, how hydrophones help with marine mammal conservation, the world of hydrophone manufacturers (some in the PNW!), and how to build a low-cost hydrophone.

John Boyle is an underwater acoustician, living in Seattle. He’s been working in ocean acoustics research for 6 years, with a focus on ocean acoustic modeling for marine mammal conservation and acoustical oceanography.
