Comcast will offer 60 days of free broadband service to low-income customers in Washington state through the rest of the year as the coronavirus pandemic forces many families to rely on home internet for school and work.

The telecom giant said Thursday that it will expand the program through 2020. The program was previously set to expire on June 30.

The 60-day offer is part of Comcast’s Internet Essentials program, which offers discounted monthly broadband service to qualifying low-income families. Comcast is also making its 1.5 million public hotspots free for anyone to use through the remainder of 2020.

The Comcast program is one of several resources that help families without reliable internet get access during the pandemic. Wave offers a similar program for Washington residents.
