VMware continued to build out its cloud story Wednesday, acquiring cloud configuration-management startup CloudCoreo to help customers get a better understanding of their risks in the cloud.

The small Seattle team — less than ten employees — will join VMware’s Cloud Services unit and CloudCoreo’s flagship configuration-management product will get folded into that group, said Milin Desai, general manager for VMware Cloud Services. Terms of the deal were not disclosed, and Desai declined to comment on the acquisition price on the sidelines of The Information’s Hybrid Cloud & AI event Wednesday in Seattle.

CloudCoreo will help VMware customers running hybrid cloud strategies better understand how their applications and data are potentially vulnerable across multiple cloud environments, Desai said. In a world where companies keep leaving their Amazon Web Services’ S3 storage buckets unprotected for some reason, services like CloudCoreo can help companies get a handle on how their cloud services are configured, and spot potential trouble spots before they turn into real problems.

“You need to make sure your data is secured,” Desai said in an interview with GeekWire after the announcement. He hopes that services such as CloudCoreo will keep VMware customers running its software to manage on-premises data centers that want to run some workloads on public cloud services within the fold.

Founded almost two years ago, CloudCoreo raised a $2.9 million seed fund led by Madrona Venture Group in October 2016. Here’s a video of CloudCoreo CEO Tom Hull, a longtime Seattle-area entrepreneur and executive, speaking about the company at our GeekWire Cloud Tech Summit last year.
