Square is just getting settled in Seattle, and it is already planning to grow.
GeekWire reported on Square’s Seattle office last week, but at the time the company didn’t say where it was located. Now we know: the company confirmed this week that it is working out of the Industrious co-working space, kitty corner from the recently-opened Amazon Spheres.
Right now, the company has a crew of less than 10 Squares, company lingo for its employees, working in Seattle. That headcount could grow quickly. Square said it has inked a lease for a larger space at Industrious set to open April with room for 30 people.
So far, Square has already nabbed former employees from Amazon, Microsoft, Starbucks and other corporate heavy-hitters for its Seattle office, according to their LinkedIn profiles.
Square is new to town, and so is Industrious. The New York based company bills itself as a “high-end” co-working space, and recently opened its first location in Seattle. The 28,000-square foot office is on the sixth and seventh floors of the Sixth and Lenora Building, across the street from Amazon’s new headquarters campus and the landmark Spheres.
Square has grown steadily since it was founded in 2009 by Twitter chief Jack Dorsey. Still unprofitable but with strong revenue growth over the last several quarters, Square is in a competitive market. Its credit card readers are a favorite among small businesses, helping it stand out from the pack.
Square has more than 1,850 total employees, according to Bloomberg, so the Seattle office isn’t yet a major outpost for the payments and financial services company. But numerous companies we’re tracking on our list of engineering centers in Seattle parachuted in with a small presence only to grow to become a top tech employer in the city.
