The Home Depot said it will hire 1,000 technology workers this year as part of a three-year, $11.1 billion strategic investment in technology and logistics.
The hiring push will help Home Depot build software to fulfill promises made late last year to enhance online shopping, warehouse footprint, delivery capabilities and workforce management systems. The teams will work out of the company’s technology centers in Atlanta, Dallas and Austin and complement Home Depot’s current roster of 2,800 tech workers.
Home Depot, like all retailers, is battling Amazon. But the home improvement heavyweight has continued to thrive where others have fallen in the face of pressure from Amazon. Home Depot stock has risen more than 18 percent this year and 134 percent in the last five years.
Last year reports surfaced that Home Depot was interested acquiring shipping company XPO Logistics, in part to keep it away from Amazon. Amazon and XPO have been mentioned as potential partners in the past as the retail giant geared up for a big push into furniture sales.
