Apple is under fire after the discovery that the company slowed down older phones as their batteries deteriorated.

Many customers see the revelation as proof that Apple was pushing iPhone users into upgrading to new, expensive flagship phones. Apple argues that it was trying to help users by preventing older batteries from causing phones to shut down and have other problems.

As Geared Up co-host Andru Edwards explains, the truth lies somewhere between those two stories. Listen to this week’s episode below for a full run-down of the issue, as well as details on Apple’s battery replacement program that can give older iPhones a new lease on life.

Also on this episode: We take a look at some of the tech and trends to watch coming out of next week’s Consumer Electronics Show, the biggest tech expo in the U.S. As per usual, Andru will be keeping an eye on the latest TV technology, including some giant 8K screens.

Other trends to watch include advances in automated vehicles and augmented reality, both technologies that are starting to gain steam and show real results. And, of course, keep an eye open for Alexa and other smart assistants as they make their way into even more gadgets and start playing a role in more parts of our lives.

Plus, GeekWire editor Todd Bishop gives us his hands-on review of the Echo Spot after using the small, touchscreen Echo device for the past few weeks. While it isn’t as good as the larger Echo Show for video chatting, he says it’s a great device to sit on his desk.

We also have a second Echo Show to give away to a listener! To enter the giveaway, just subscribe to Geared Up in Apple Podcasts, OvercastStitcher or your favorite podcast app and submit a screenshot of your subscription in this form:
