Vicis has raised more money to help scale development and production of its high-tech football helmet.

The Seattle startup confirmed today with GeekWire that it has reeled in another $4 million via convertible note. The company raised $4 million in October as part of the same note.

Vicis CEO Dave Marver speaks at the GeekWire Sports Tech Summit.

New investors include Dallas-based Peregrine Group. Total funding in Vicis is now nearly $28 million.

Founded in 2013, Vicis has created the $1,500 ZERO1 helmet that features a unique outer shell material designed to mitigate the forces thought to cause concussions on the football field and in other contact sports. Other investors include former NFL players and top biotech veterans. Its coalition includes Seattle Seahawks stars like Doug BaldwinRichard Sherman and Bobby Wagner.

Vicis spun out of the University of Washington in 2014 and one of its co-founders, CTO Per Reinhall, is the chairman of the UW Mechanical Engineering Department. Reinhall co-founded the company with Vicis CEO Dave Marver and Chief Medical Officer Samuel Browd.

This past fall, the University of Washington and University of Oregon football teams wore the ZERO1 helmets, but Vicis pulled the helmets after player complaints about forehead pressure and a “higher than expected frequency of upper chinstrap disengagement.”

Vicis has since addressed those issues and the helmet will be used on the field next season, the company confirmed. It’s not clear if NFL, college, or youth teams will be using the helmet — it could be all three, a company spokesman said today.

The ZERO1 will be part of the NFL’s helmet testing this winter.
