Finding any kind of real estate in Seattle is pretty hard — and for a large, public biotech company like Juno Therapeutics, the search for a new home is particularly difficult.

The fast-growing company wanted a large office that could house its research labs and the bulk of its employees near Seattle’s downtown core, but no such building existed.

So, they decided to build one. The company’s new headquarters at 400 Dexter Ave. boasts 176,000 square feet of office space and 65,000 square feet of lab space across nine stories.

GeekWire got a sneak peek inside the building before its official opening party Wednesday and also sat down with Juno CEO Hans Bishop to talk about the milestone the building represents for Juno and for Seattle’s biotech industry.

The headquarters took some unique planning and design: five of its floors are split between office and lab space, with floor-to-ceiling windows in between to integrate the two sides of the company. And all the employees work in open office spaces — even the executives.
