Decades of music, concerts, films and countless hazy recollections about the Grateful Dead will give way Friday to a new documentary on the legendary band when “Long Strange Trip: The Untold Story of the Grateful Dead” makes its debut on Amazon Video.
The four-hour documentary from director Amir Bar-Lev and executive producer Martin Scorsese aims to tell the “inspiring, complicated, downright messy tale” of the band that created a culture and following unique to rock ‘n’ roll.
The film premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January and had a one-night theatrical release in select U.S. cities on May 25 before beginning a one-week run in New York and Los Angeles on May 26 ahead of the Amazon release.
The film includes footage of legendary frontman Jerry Garcia along with new interviews with surviving band members and those who either worked closely with the Dead or called themselves fans for decades.
