Amazon this morning unveiled a new home security camera, Cloud Cam, with a companion Amazon Key app that works with smart locks to let Amazon Prime members give house cleaners, dog walkers, package delivery companies and other service providers access to their homes.
The new $119.99, motion-detecting, 1080p HD camera and virtual key service make Amazon a rival to Google’s Nest Cam, August camera smart locks and other players in home security — demonstrating the tech giant’s ability to quickly extend its reach into new markets. Amazon Key also addresses the ongoing challenge of package theft and provides an additional benefit for Amazon Prime members.
Amazon Cloud Cam is set for release Nov. 8 in selected markets. It works with a subscription service that runs between $6.99/month and $19.99/month for additional features such as person detection, extended cloud storage and the ability to use up to 10 cameras. A free tier lets users download the previous 24 hours of video clips without a paid subscription, with support for up to three cameras.
Cloud Cam and Amazon Key integrate with Amazon.com, as explained by the company: “Shop on Amazon and select ‘FREE in-home delivery’ at checkout. On delivery day, we’ll notify you just before the delivery. Amazon will authorize the delivery and unlock your door. You can watch the delivery live in the Amazon Key App or see a video of it later. We’ll notify you once the delivery is complete and your door is relocked.”
In addition, the device works with Amazon Alexa, letting users ask the voice-enabled assistant to show a live feed from the camera on an Amazon Fire TV, Fire Tablet, Echo Show, or Echo Spot.
An Amazon Key In-Home Kit, including an Amazon Cloud Cam and a compatible smart lock, sells for $249.99.
