Amazon today introduced a new feature for its Alexa-powered catalog of devices: musical alarms that essentially turn the smart speakers into high tech clock radios.

The new musical alarm feature supports Amazon Music, Spotify, Pandora, TuneIn, SiriusXM and iHeartRadio. Users can, through voice commands, set daily alarms for a specific song, playlist, or radio station.

On Amazon Music, users can ask Alexa to set a musical alarm based on just a couple lyrics. Here is the example from Amazon: “Alexa, set an alarm at 7 a.m. to the song that goes ‘I’ve paid my dues time after time.'”

The feature comes as Amazon gets set to release the Echo Spot, a combo between the Echo Dot and Echo Show, on Dec. 19. The Echo Spot’s size and capabilities make it a good bet to become a popular bedside device.

Alexa has more than 25,000 voice-activated apps, or skills, and it is adding more all the time. Many come from Amazon itself, but the company also opened up the digital brain in 2015, to encourage third-party developers to build skills of their own.
