The 140-character limit for Twitter’s direct messaging platform is officially gone.
Twitter announced today that users will be able to type up to 10,000 characters when sending direct messages to others.
Here’s Twitter Senior Vice President of Product Kevin Weil:
Boom! No more 140 character limit on DMs. One small step—lots more to come! https://t.co/LcSdpPkMc7

Twitter originally announced the move in June. Users across all Twitter platforms will start seeing the change today, with everyone receiving the capability to send longer direct messages within a few weeks.
The 140-character limit still exists for normal tweets. While Twitter has made it easier to share photos, the company still focuses on short bursts for communication and has actually created new limits for users sharing links in recent years.
Twitter’s stock has dipped nearly 40 percent in the past six months as it looks replace former CEO Dick Costolo and keep up with competition as its monthly active user growth slows.
